Introduction
This article provides a comprehensive overview of Cloud Identity, also known as Google Workspace. It will also demonstrate the process of registering a domain in the platform. By the end of this article, readers will have a better understanding of the functionalities and benefits of Cloud Identity and be equipped with the necessary knowledge to register a domain in it.
What is Google Workspace?
Google Workspace, formerly G Suite, is a cloud-based productivity suite that provides various tools to help individuals and teams collaborate and get work done efficiently. It includes applications such as Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, Google Meet, Google Forms, and more. Google Workspace is designed to streamline communication and collaboration and offers a range of features such as real-time editing, commenting, and automatic saving to make work easier and faster.
What is Cloud Identity or Google Workspace account?
Like Microsoft Entra ID or Microsoft 365 tenant, it is the top-level container for users, groups, configuration, and data. It is created when a company signs up for Cloud Identity or Google Workspace.
Technically, Cloud Identity and Google Workspace share a common platform. Both products use the same APIs and administrative tools, share the same container, and are identified as a common domain name.
Important: A Cloud Identity or Google Workspace account is not a user account but a directory of user accounts.
Benefits
If your organisation owns multiple domains, add them to your organisation’s Google account. You can also let users in different domains share Google services as one organisation or give them an identity in multiple domains.
Implementation Steps
For this demonstration, I have already set up a Google Workspace account. In order to register a domain
- In any web browser, go to admin.google.com

- Go to Menu and then Account–>Domains–>Manage domains
- In Manage Domains, click Add a Domain
- Enter the domain name and keep the other setting as default in the Select a Domain type section
- Click Add Domain and start verification

- Click Next, and on the Find your DNS records or settings page, click Next: GO TO STEP 2

- Copy the code generated by the wizard.

- Add the TXT record value on your DNS registar portal to verify the domain ownership

- Once added, comeback and click PROTECT DOMAIN

- Please wait for a while to verify the domain ownership record

- Finally, you can see the domain registered in Google Workspace.

Conclusion
Companies can register their domain or domains to use Google services only for their employees. This helps them create a private and safe area for their team. Furthermore, companies can connect their Active Directory Forest or LDAP with Google Workspace, allowing employees to use their external identity to use Google services. This connection ensures that all users and groups are updated and managed centrally through Active Directory, making it easy for IT administrators to manage user access.
